The first 250 schools to register for Walk+Bike to School Day are eligible for up to $40 in incentives to be used to promote and reward participation in Walk+Bike to School Day. Click here to register and order a "Starter Kit" or choose the mix of goodies for your event.

You know your school, and perhaps intangible incentives are the biggest reward you can give a student..... maybe a staff vs student basketball game, make school announcements, walk the red carpet are what the students remember. See below for more ideas.

If you are planning food incentives, please look for healthy snacks like fruit.

Incentives or Not?

The jury is out! Some schools think incentives are necessary to attract people to try to walk or bike to school, and get them to stay at it especially when the weather is not so good. Others think that rewards for behavior that one should be doing anyway does not change that behavior and will not be sustainable when the rewards are taken away.

Maybe start with some small incentives, make them random and look to ongoing points contests where people collect points for healthy, active prizes at the end of a term or year. We had a school wild about the possibility of winning a soccer game between the winning class and the teachers or lunch with the Principal and the School Resource Officer.

Here's an abridged version of Dr Laura Riffel's observation about incentives.

Here are some additional Low Cost ideas from Tove Gilbert-Morgan from Albany's SRTS program.
